Paintings of this short period are marked by a turn away from high-keyed colours to very subdued sombre contrasts. Here was the time for discipline that was to prove most useful for all later works. This period was outstanding by the use of hard-edge, and kinetic movement. Figures, as silhouettes, without identity, are confined inside, ridged Surreal space-time situations; sometimes trapped in tight mazes in the manner of Escher, again in huge contrast to the freedom allowed of the previous period area paintings. Here was a geometric unsettling realism that performed two-dimensionally in space, alone, with little regard of emotional human experience. Figures became silhouettes in various movements involving time & space – linear in all respects – brushstrokes avoided – subdued colour – hard edge
